Southwest High School is the only school in the Imperial Valley to offer an academy for the visual and performing arts.
Known within the school district and the community simply as SAVAPA, the Southwest Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts aspires to serve two primary purposes.
1.) to educate and inspire students with an equal focus on academic, social and personal growth
2.) to create an essence of community by fostering lifelong learning through involvement in the arts.
The computer animation and technical theater courses offered on campus are the academy's two career technical education courses as they fall under the academic instruction of the CTE department. These two areas of SAVAPA are designed to provide the educational background and training necessary for direct employability.
SAVAPA is comprised of approximately 100 students in grades ten through twelve. Although most student performances related to the program occur within SHS’s state of the art theater, participating students regularly perform at other school sites and venues within the community.
SAVAPA is comprised of six art component classes:
1. Dance
2. Theatre
3. Chorus
4. Art
5. Computer Animation
6. Technical Theater.
